With navigator’s sketch at hand, the tricorn of Southern Falcons on his head, a Gibson Albatross cresting his bib and a brocade of birdlife woven into his frock coat, Hunter represents Cook’s wonder at the avian life thriving in and around New Zealand’s southern shoreline and our concern for these vulnerable species today.

Karearea - Southern Falcon, Toroa - Gibson Albatross, Kākāpō – Night Parrot, Tīeke - South Island Saddleback, Matuku–Reef Heron, Mōhua – Yellowhead, Kāruhiruhi – Varius Pied Shag, Kea – Alpine Parrot, Pukupuka – Little Spotted Kiwi and Tawaki -Fiordland Crested Penguin.
