Seeking to honour the legacy of New Zealand’s first government appointed conservation ranger. Hunter depicts Richard Henry absorbed by the Pigeon Island bush and the birds he sought to protect. Like sacred Māori pou, two jetty piles stand as the only tangible remnants of his life on the island. Reflecting Henry’s legacy that still continues today an imprint outline of the 11 threatened, endangered or vulnerable birds surround him. With the use of his knowledge Department of Conservation are helping protect today in Dusky Sounds. Inside each bird depicts a part of Dusky Sound. Four birds drink from a waterfall from Pigeon Island which is part of this amazing ecosystem found in the deep south of New Zealand.

Karearea - Southern Falcon, Toroa - Gibson Albatross, Kākāpō – Night Parrot, Tīeke - South Island Saddleback, Matuku–Reef Heron, Mōhua – Yellowhead, Kāruhiruhi – Varius Pied Shag, Kea – Alpine Parrot, Pukupuka – Little Spotted Kiwi and Tawaki -Fiordland Crested Penguin.
