Yellowhead (Mohua) Full Flight, Dusky Sound
from Tamatea: Art and Conservation in Dusky Sound
Acrylic on linen

Once known as the bush canary because of its trilling song, the Yellowhead resides only in the South Island and Stewart Island.
Rising from the edge of a mist-shrouded lake, the Yellowhead soars to the clouds. Hunter captures it almost as if in freefall, allowing a momentary glimpse of plumage splashed in brightest yellow, feathers splayed in an exuberant fan, before it’s gone, a flash of gold threading through the forest.
